Bassim Haidar: revolutionary fintech entrepreneur and philanthropist

Bassim Haidar has a CV of Elon Musk proportions.

Born in Nigeria and raised by Lebanese parents, his pivotal experiences early in life led to his success in revolutionising technology in some of the world’s developing regions.

Specifically, the Beirut University College alumnus set his entrepreneurial sights on addressing the needs of the people of Nigeria and Lebanon.

At the age of 20, Haidar brought his redoubtable skills and efforts to technology, co-founding and leading Intercomm Ltd., a tech company specialising in telecom equipment and radio links.

He is behind GMT, the leading integrated procurement, finance and logistics provider in West Africa. He also founded Channel IT, which provides supplies and services to the telecommunications industry in Nigeria.

In 2011, Haidar established Channel VAS, one of the leading providers of mobile financial and fintech services for emerging markets, operating in over 30 countries and reaching more than 560 million people.

Philanthropy

In January 2016, Haider was appointed as a member of Amnesty International Global Council, a global non-governmental organisation that envisions a world where the fundamental human rights established in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are granted to every person.

Bassim Haidar also conducts the Channel VAS Squash Tournaments in the UK, which is a Gold tier tournament under the Professional Squash Association calendar. All the proceeds from these events are donated to CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families.
