November 2020 Review

America's Best Customized Dog Food

There are several brands of tailor-made dog food on the market. We take an in-depth look at five of the best available today to give you a better understanding of the best custom dog food for your furry friend.

After weighing up the odds we voted The Farmers Dog as THE BEST CUSTOMIZED DOG FOOD.

  1. Best Price – bespoke dog food from only $2 per day
  2. High-Quality Ingredients – USDA approved
  3. Convenient – ready to serve individual packets that come frozen

Each option gives you the ability to enter your dog’s information, so your results may vary from ours.

#1 | The Farmers Dog

The Competition

The Farmer’s Dog | #1 CHOICE

WHY #1: The Farmer’s Dog  creates amazing, fresh, ready-to-serve meals for your dog and delivers them to your home. Well, all the competition do.

WHAT WE LOVED

  1. Convenient – delivered servings as the pre-measured, ready-to-serve packets which just made everything so easy! They arrived frozen, taking up minimal space compared to some options list below.
  2. Price – Using Reggie’s information, the price came to $52 per week or approximately $7 per day. Per the site, plans start at only $2 per day
  3. Ingredients .- we found them the highest quality. All USDA approved suppliers & ingredients and they show you all the ingredients and their benefits which we liked.

Our Reggie loved the taste but their customer’s online reviews also confirmed that taste was the highest.

We read some reviews online where people didn’t like the individual packaging. Not sure we agree with that, but hey. Can’t please everyone.

Additionally, some prefer fresh food, but that makes it much less convenient in our opinion. We prefer the safety and convenience of frozen food. Also our dog likes it much better than kibble.

HOW IT WORKS

After you answer a few questions about your doggie on their site, you’re offered a specialized plan. They also have a trial option, which is nice if you’re not yet sold on their product.

Features: The Farmer’s Dog only uses human-grade ingredients in their recipes, it smells amazing to be honest, you can tell its really human food. We stopped short of trying it ourselves though!

All their customized formulas are designed by 100% certified veterinary nutritionists to ensure completeness andmeet AAFCO standards.

Meals are made fresh and without preservatives. They are frozen for shipment, allowing for safe travel to your door without spoiling.

The food is a wet & shredded rather than kibble. We like this! Our dog prefers wet food ALWAYS!

It is a subscription-based service, like all of our reviewed brands. This is super convenient. It means a steady  steady stream of fresh food.

Most Popular Recipes:

  • Turkey & parsnip
  • Beef & lentil
  • Pork & sweet potato

Nom Nom

WHAT WE LIKED

The single-meal-sized bags make feeding clean and easy, eliminating the need to scoop and store messy leftovers. Most reviewers raved about how much their pups loved the taste, and it seemed to be a particular hit among picky pooches.

WHAT WE DIDN’T LIKE

  1. If we’re honest, there isn’t alot of customization compared with the competition. Some of our other reviewed brands offer far more.
  2. Also, the price is quite high.
  3. Finally, fresh food is great but we prefer frozen or dry so as to not take up room in our fridge.

About: Offering prepackaged, single-size meals, Nom Nom sources restaurant-quality ingredients to create fresh food for your pup.

The food is never frozen which made storage harder to be honest. But this meant it wasn’t produced on a mass scale, which meant its freshness was there, but you need to make sure you use it (or you’ll literally lose it!)

No surprise here, again Nom Nom have experts watching over their work. Each Nom Nom formula is designed by a veterinary nutritionist. And again, every formula meets AAFCO standards, and Nom Nom produce the food exclusively at their own facilities.

Price: Obviously this varies by your doggie size, etc. But we found 2 weeks of food was to $89 for Maya or $7 per day.

HOW IT WORKS

Their customized plans are not as long as other customized dog food companies, but they do ask some usual questions likeyour dog’s breed, weight, and body condition to ensure a proper feeding amount.

If you’re seeking a very specific dog food we don’t recommend this Nom Nom, they don’t get super granular on their recipes.

Popular Recipe Options:

  • Heartland Beef Mash
  • Tasty Turkey Fare
  • Chicken Chow-Wow
  • Porkalicious Potluck

Protein Content (Turkey): 10% min

Customization Requirements:

  • Dog’s name
  • Dog’s sex
  • Dog’s breed
  • Dog’s weight
  • Dog’s age
  • Dog’s body condition (underweight, ideal, overweight)
  • Select if you want to try one of the meals or mix and match
  • If you’re like full portions (for a complete fresh diet) or half portions for mixing in your current food

Ollie

PROS

  1. Transition Plan – Ollies offer a transition plan  to help ease your dog onto the diet, which prevents gastric upset. This makes alot of sense.
  2. Sensitive to sensitive dogs – Ollie’s omission of  corn, soy, and wheat is a huge benefit for allergy-prone doggies, and the mainly meat and organ ingredients lists are amazing quality.
  3. Reviews – Online reviewers are the best we’ve seen. All say taste and benefits are 5 star.
  4. Price – for such a specilized diet the price was great. Our dog was approximately $45.99 a week or $6.57 a day

CONS

  1. SERVING – They include a scoop but feeding tends to get a little messy. Storing open packets between feedings.
  2. Price was high
  3. Frozen packages not for everyone

About: Ollie is the best on the market by far. Their are regarded the best brand in the customized dog food industry for one specific reason: It portions out your dog’s food to fit his dietary needs EXCTLY.

Like the others, its a subscription-based service that provides frozen food

Features: Ollie’s have a VERY in-depth profile questionnaire. Once a plan is configured based on your answers, you can choose the protein source of your choice, as well as the portion size.

This is divided into feeding your dog in 3 distinct types of diet;

  • A 100% Ollie diet
  • A mostly Ollie diet with a bit of your regular food
  • A small amount of an Ollie diet with mostly your food

Experts design the food like the others. Every formula is vet-designed, ensuring that your dog receives a well-rounded diet. It’s human-grade dog food made with no fillers or artificial flavors,

Popular Recipes:

  • Beef
  • Chicken
  • Lamb
  • Turkey

Protein Content for turkey variety: 20% (high!)

Just Right

WHAT WE LOVED

  1. Protein Content for her formula: 25%
  2. Price: Just Right was more affordable than the others, with a 6-pound bag/ 9-day supply costing $19.99, only $2.22 a day. This will vary depending on your dog’s needs.
  3. Customization Requirements: Your dog’s photo to be featured on his bag, which we loved!
  4. Warnings: My dog is a chihuahua and it triggered a warning to double-check based on her breed. How dare!) A blend name you’d like to call it

WHAT WE DIDN’T LOVE

It’s kibble, which many picky pups will still turn their noses up to. The ingredients don’t seem much different than store-based formulas either (Just Right also comes from Purina, which some owners won’t love). It isn’t prepackaged in single-use sizes, either, so you will have to measure out the proper amount with each feeding.

About: Just Right was pretty darn good.A custom dog food company. they use no by-products, artificial colors, additives, or preservatives in their recipes.

Features: Customizing your dog’s food is relatively simple with Just Right – as with the others you just enter his information, answer a few questions, and you’re presented with a personalized plan just for him.

You can review all ingredients, and review specific reasons of why his blend is what it is. Like the others, every formula is veterinarian and nutritionist-approved.

The food comes delivered in a bag with his picture on it which we thought was a delightful personal touch.

You also geta custom feeding guide for you dog(s). It’s kibble-based, which makes storage virtally risk free.

Popular Recipes:

  • Chicken
  • Salmon
  • Lamb

Protein Content for her formula: 25% (highest we saw)

Customization Requirements:

  • Your dog’s photo to be featured on his bag, of course
  • Dog’s name
  • Dog’s sex
  • Dog’s age
  • Breed
  • Dog’s size (toy, small, medium, large, giant)
  • Dog’s weight (Fun fact: I entered 55 pounds for Maya, and it triggered a warning to double-check based on her breed. How dare!)
  • A blend name you’d like to call it (I chose Maya’s munchies)
  • Dog’s body condition (underweight, ideal weight, overweight)
  • Dog’s daily activity level (less active, semi-active, active, highly active)
  • Dog’s eating habits (begrudgingly, casual/grazing, eagerly and instant)
  • Dog’s movements when getting to his feet (slow and cautious, casual/relaxed, quick and exuberant)
  • Dog’s coat condition (dull, fairly shiny, glossy)
  • How often dog has dry skin (usually, sometimes, almost never)
  • Dog’s stool consistency (loose, semi-solid, solid)
  • Any ingredients you’d like to exclude
  • If you’d like grain or not (I said yes)
  • Protein preference (salmon, lamb, chicken)

Pet Plate

WHAT WE LOVED

  1. Recyclable – Containers are recyclable rather than single-use plastic,  saving the environmental cost.  This container also makes it easier to seal leftovers
  2. Topper Plan – This saves on cost and provides a happy medium cost-wise.
  3. Pre-portion packed meal sizes

WHAT WE DIDN’T LOVE

  1. Price – Pet Plate is the highest price compared to other soptions.
  2. Container size –  size made it harder to pack into a fridge/freezer
  3. Price: Dog depended but Reggie’s was $9 per day which wasn’t the cheapest out there.

About: Pet Plate is a custom dog food delivery service that brings your pup fresh, human-grade food free of icky byproducts and artificial ingredients.

Delivered in pre-portioned containers which we loved, it doesn’t keep you guessing about meal size.

Features: Pet Plate is made using only USDA-approved meats, fruits, and vegetables, and its prep facilities also pass the sniff test with the USDA.

Every batch is tested to ensure safety, and flash freezing makes delivering it to your home without spoiling simple.

The diet is designed by a trained veterinarian who specializes in nutrition, so you don’t have to worry about the soundness of the formula.

Simply enter your pup’s information, and Pet Plate will calculate his dietary needs.

Popular Recipes:

  • Beef

Creating Your Plan

How do I sign up for a plan?

Click here to tell us about your dog and weʼll determine their perfect plan. Itʼll only take a few minutes!

How much does this cost?

Plans start at $2/day and include free shipping. Each dog is different, and full-meal pricing will depend on a variety of factors including age, weight, activity, and more. Because we deliver the food right to your door, you can be sure that your dollars are going towards the highest quality ingredients, not to the mark-ups of a big retail store. To determine your exact costs, simply fill out our short questionnaire!

How do you determine my dogʼs portions?

They work closely with their vet nutritionists to figure out the optimal calorie needs for different combinations of breed, age, activity level, ideal weight, and sensitivities. Certain dogs can metabolize faster than others, so some plans may need further adjusting.
